The news was given to the members of the Belmullet Electoral Area Committee this week. Senior engineer for Mayo County Council Michael Monaghan gave the news to the four members of the committee and it was warmly welcomed. Mongan told the meeting: “I’ve been briefing you on this issue since the start of the year at each meeting since there was a systems failure, but that has been fully fixed and upgraded, and from next week on the bridge will be fully operational again.”

Conway-Walsh can’t support Church Road development

Sinn Fein councillor Rose Conway-Walsh this week voted against the adoption of a part eight report on a development of three dwellings for older people and a commercial unit at Church Road, Belmullet, at the Belmullet Electoral Area Committee meeting. Cllr Conway-Walsh gave her reasons for not supporting the item saying: “I can’t support this. I think that Church Road is congested enough already. It has seen the landscape change dramatically over the past number of years. This is not in the interests of best planning.”

Works approved for Mulranny to Westport road

The members of the Belmullet Electoral Area committee gave their full backing to the preferred route of the improvement works to be carried out on the N59 from Westport to Mulranny this week. Director of services and county engineer Joe Beirne gave the members an update on the preferred route, which will keep very much in line with the existing road.

Achill bridge problem well on the way to solution

“We seem to have got to the bottom of it and hope to have the whole thing dealt with inside a week or two,” senior engineer for Mayo County Council, Michael Mongan, said this week in relation to the new Achill Island bridge. Leasing will be ‘death knell’ of rural Ireland

The chair of the Belmullet Electoral Area committee, Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle, said that the move towards the council leasing houses to people, rather than supplying houses, would be the “death knell for rural villages” as many of the units for lease are in the larger areas.
